Our store history

In summer of 1992, Original Baker’s Delight, opened it’s door as a small bakery with only 2,000 square foot space in a small plaza in the corner of Harlem and Dempster street in Morton Grove, Illinois.  Selling hot pan de sal, tasty bread, pan de leche and other Filipino pastries. With only 5 employees, OBD slowly went into distribution to the nearby Filipino and Chinese grocery stores around Chicago. Years later, the distribution grew big that they have to service some part of Wisconsin and Michigan. Then hundreds of local customers and out-of-towners visit  the small bakery store everyday and packed especially in the weekend.

The group, finally decided to expand and open our own grocery store.  In October of 1996, the group opened Uni-Mart One Stop Shopping, located in Andersonville neighborhood in 5845 North Clark St., Chicago.  With it’s unique “One Stop Shop” concept, a Filipino would not miss anything from home.  A grocery store, complete with popular brand canned sardines, chips, soy sauce, your mom’s favorite fish sauce brand and frozen Filipino vegetables imported from Manila.  A fish and seafood section being attended by trained fish cleaning staff, who would clean and custom cut your fish for free.  There’s also a small selected fruits and produce section that would make a Filipino dish complete. A video rental section with the latest movies and tv shows in the Philippines together with a huge selection of phone cards to call your love ones. In the middle section of the store lies the carry out.  We branded it Original Baker’s Delight Carry Out. You will find a  wide selection of Filipino dishes and prepared food in the long counter, waiting for you with Filipino staff ready to serve you.  You will find 30 or more authentic Filipino dishes freshly cooked every day alongside bakery products for your desserts, snacks or gifts.  With it’s bakery in Morton Grove, Uni-Mart accepts order of cakes for all occasions.  Try the popular mocha flavored cake.  Among other services that we provide,  we have also teamed up with a reputable Balikbayan box forwarding company.  You can conveniently drop off your boxes in the store, free of charge and we will have it pick up by the forwarder.

With the goal of serving the Filipino community in Illinois and to bring the Filipino food and culture across the mainstream market, Uni-Mart Hoffman Estates was opened in May 1999, consistent with the Clark St. concept. This store services the northwest community of Schaumburg, Streamwood as far as Crystal Lake, Elgin and Rockford area.

Following that year, we celebrated the opening of Uni-Mart Niles located in 7315 West Dempster Street. This move gave Original Baker’s Delight it’s new home.  In June of 2000, we started baking more and more breads and cakes in the second floor of the grocery store with an 8,000 square foot facility. Increasing the product lines and distribution area.  Uni-Mart Niles covers the area of Park Ridge, Skokie, Des Plaines and Northshore neighborhood.

Uni-Mart Woodridge is the fourth store that celebrated it’s opening in July of 2004.  This store conveniently serves the Southwest area of Chicagoland as far as Naperville, Joliet, Tinley Park, Romeoville and other suburbs.

Today, Uni-Mart and Original Baker’s Delight have more than a hundred employees that continue to provide authentic Filipino food and home style dishes with the strong mission to carry on the tradition and service the Filipino families and the rest of the community.
